Chang Che-chia
The idea of "Heaven" in the West is very similar to "the sacred and innocent Western Paradise" in Eastern Buddhist culture. It is generally considered as where beauty and goodness belong. Through Zhang, Zhe-Jia's lens, the paradise is presented as a quiet, peaceful, blue-and-white ancient city floating in the sky, which is a fascinating place that people always dream of.
When he first went studying in Paris, France, Zhe-Jia relieved the pressure of life and homesickness by his favorite photography. He also recorded his curiosity and exploration of a foreign country through the lens. At that moment, he had never thought that his photography works would won the second place of 2011 CROUS National Art Creation Competition in Versailles, French, in category of photography, while studying at the Versailles Academy of Fine Arts. In 2016, he started to create photography works. In the same year, he participated in the national art competition organized by French paper merchant Clairefontaine and L’Etudiant Education magazine, won the special award, and was exhibited at the Salon d’Automne in Paris in September. As an architect, Zhe-Jia recorded his life in Europe through travels and the lens, especially the culture, religion and humanities that fascinated him. While appreciating his works, people also wander in the beauty of visualized spaces.
In southern France, there are many ancient cities built on towering mountains, each with its mysterious and beautiful story, which seems to be the best place for Zhe-Jia to explore. There are lots of blanks in the image, leaving them to viewers’ mysterious imaginations. Of course, Zhe-Jia had a rational plan in the shooting process. He collected and studied a large amount of natural and cultural information of each city, so he could have a better control of each shooting. He shot the night view of the mountain as well as the corridor streets in the city, and presented the intertwined white and blue by processing negative films. The contrast of the color highlights the close connection of the "light" to the residents. It is how Zhe-Jia depicts heaven, simple but warm.
During his creation, Zhe-Jia not only had to arrange the shooting schedule, but faced the pressure of both studying alone and earning his living, which gave him a binary understanding of heaven that “heaven exists in the contrast”. Just like a saying "only people and things that are not beautiful can bring out good value", the setbacks encountered in life can make people suffered as they are in hell, and the closer they are to "hell", the more they expect and believe the existence of heaven.
